A process for concentrating microalgae slurries by forward osmosis with glycerol solutions or waste glycerol

Resumen

Concentrating microalgal suspensions by using a dialysis membrane submerged in glycerol solutions.

Originally intended for improving the overall energy efficiency of a biomass recovery process and  the re-use of crude glycerol of a biodiesel production process, but with application in the food and pharmaceutical industries for concentrating microalgae slurries by using pure glycerol where safety conditions is required.

The algal broth is transferred into the dialysis tube and the tube is sealed with the closures and submerged into the glycerol solution. A 2.5-fold concentration of an algal broth from a bioreactor could be achieved within 1 h.

Ventaja competitiva

  • The dewatering process can work for microalgae grown in freshwater, seawater and hypersaline media.
  • Dewatering fluxes of nearly 3 L m-2·h-1 can be achieved.
  • A nearly 3-fold concentration of biomass in an algal broth is feasible by the proposed method.
  • Simple, low energy cost.
